The CDC’s 5 Part Plan to Protect the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers

The mental and emotional effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers are with HHS. well documented announcement in July, the availability of an estimated US $ 103 million in US bailout funds to address the issue.

Some workers have even left their jobs in the overwhelming circumstances created by the pandemic, citing inadequate pay, lack of opportunities and burnout. A poll conducted in September by Morning counseling, a global private data intelligence company, showed that nearly one in five healthcare workers, or 18 percent, left their jobs as of February 2020.

To improve and protect the mental health and well-being of healthcare workers, the CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health unveiled a five-part mental health protection plan during a webinar on November 18 Medscape.

The plan includes a primary preventive approach to the mental health of health workers. Corresponding Medscape and slides shared with Beckers, it contains:

  • Understand the daily personal, social, and economic pressures that healthcare workers face
  • Assimilation of evidence and development of best practices, resources and interventions
  • Working with the American Hospital Association, the American Nurses Association, National Nurses United, The Joint Commission, and other stakeholders
  • Identify and adapt tools for the healthcare workplace that focus on stress relief
  • Awareness of stress through a national, multi-dimensional social marketing campaign
