Teens Training Teens State Course Offers Psychological First Aid | KCII radio

Life comes complete with many stressors. With this knowledge in hand, Project Recovery Iowa is launching a new program that will take peer counseling to another level to help individuals deal with issues they face. Karen Hyatt, Iowa Disaster Behavior Health Coordinator at the Iowa Department of Human Services, has partnered with several organizations across the state, including Keokuk County Public Health, to offer online courses to help people overcome disability. This free course, titled Teens Training Teens, is offered online in two and a half hour segments to teach skills to conduct psychological first aid. Hyatt joined KCII News through the JJ Nieting Company in Touch with Southeast Iowa program to share what psychological first aid is, why it is important for help to come from peers, and examples of current stressors facing the community people in the state. “Psychological first aid is taught by six high school students from across the state. It was designed to help people acquire communication skills to deal with stress and cope with adversity after a disaster. The training is aimed only at people who want to learn new skills in dealing with crises in order to help not only themselves but also others. I think any kind of peer support is really well received. We have just witnessed a natural phenomenon. People from Winterset High School enroll in this class because it may not have been their home, but the community has been hit pretty hard. It could even be their parents who are stressed out by this, the pandemic, or other issues. People just want to learn some new skills.”

The course will take place on Tuesday and Thursday, March 29thth and 31St from 6-7:30 p.m. every evening. In addition to this week’s course for teenagers, there are future dates in April and May for adults.
