Kenya: Team Kenya for Deaflympics Set for Mental Health Workshop, Media Relations
Nairobi – Team Kenya, which will represent the country at the Summer Deaflympic in Brazil, will benefit from a two-day workshop focused on media relations and mental health.
The team, which covered the residential camp at Kasarani Stadium 23 days before departure on April 1, will be led by senior sports editors on Thursday through a media relations training session on how to respond to interviews, portray yourself on camera and how it can improve its relationships with sportswriters.
On the second day on Friday, the athletes will be instructed on how to deal with mental illness.
“In addition to training for the competitions tomorrow, April 7, 2022, the team will be taken through media work sessions to prepare them for media interviews as we try to improve their skills on and off the field,” said Sports CS Amina statements.
“Furthermore, in recognition of the widespread prevalence of mental illness in the athletics fraternity, in partnership with the Chiromo Hospital Group, we have organized a mental health awareness session for the athletes and team officials attending this Friday 8th ” added the CS added.
Namely, Kenya will field athletes in five disciplines; Athletics (men and women), soccer (women), basketball (men and women), handball (men and women) and golf (men).
The team will be in training camp for 23 days, after which a team of 136 athletes will be selected to fly the Kenyan flag at the competitions, which take place May 1-15 in Caxias Do Sul, Brazil.

-Kenya at the Deaflympics-
Kenya first competed in the 1997 Summer Deaflympics in Copenhagen, Denmark. Since then, Kenya have bagged a total of 38 medals; 12 gold, 10 silver, 16 bronze.
At the last edition in 2017 in Samsun, Turkey, Kenya finished 9th overall and 1st in Africa out of 97 nations with a total of 13 medals; 4 gold, 4 silver, 6 bronze. All medals were won in athletics with clean wins in the men’s 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
The Deaflympics is an international multisport event organized by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD).
The first edition, held in Paris in 1924, was also the first sporting event for people with special needs.
The Summer Deaflympics take place every 4 years and is the oldest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.
4,500 deaf athletes and teams from over 100 countries are expected to attend the 24th summer edition in Caxias Do Sul.
Brazil will be the first country in Latin America to host the Summer Deaflympic Games.
