Deepika Padukone, who has been active in the past in raising mental health awareness and fighting depression, is currently based in Thiruvalllur in Tamil Nadu expanding the mental health program of her mental health foundation Live Love Laugh ahead of World Day of mental health on October 10 During her trip, the actor spoke about the importance of the caregiver in coping with mental illness. Speaking to NDTV, the actress revealed she wouldn’t know what condition she would have been in today if her mother hadn’t identified her symptoms.

When asked about the role of family in mental health, Deepika said: “It’s extremely important. Even in my personal journey the role of caregiver has been extremely important, that’s why my mother is here, that’s why my sister has been so passionate about this cause for many years and also because of this, when I hear the caregivers’ stories, I understand how important that is as well and the emotional well-being of the caregiver is just as important as the emotional well-being of the person with mental illness.”

She added: “In my own case, for example, my mother and caregiver would not have recognized my symptoms in my moment of vulnerability had she not had the presence of mind to tell me or to help me reach out to the professionals, me.” I don’t know what condition I would be in today. To make sure I was treated regularly, with my consultations with the doctors and of course the nurse is asking too and that’s nothing new. I think caregivers in general, whether it’s mental illness or some other form of illness, it takes a toll on the caregiver.”

Deepika Padukone came out about her mental illness in 2015, revealing she had been battling depression and seeking help a year earlier. Her foundation, Live Love Laugh, aims to help people struggling with their mental health.

In another event, Deepika recalled her ordeal with depression to NDTV: “My parents live in Bengaluru and every time they visit me, even now when they visit me, I have always made a brave front as if all is in ok would be you always know you i want to show your parents that you are ok… so i did one of these things as if im ok… until one day they left, went back to bengaluru and i broke down and my mom asked i have the usual hygiene questions like is it a boyfriend? is it someone at work Something happened? And I just didn’t have any answers… it wasn’t any of those things. And it just came from a really empty, hollow place. And she knew right away, and I think God was sent for me.
