Academic burnout plagues students in the middle of the school year


Academic burnout is a challenge that many students face during their studies. Given the stress of tough lessons, the desire for a healthy social life and the ongoing pandemic, students feel that academic burnout is stronger than in previous school years.

Academic burnout is defined as a negative emotional, physical, and mental response to prolonged study that leads to exhaustion, frustration, lack of motivation, and impaired ability in school, so University of the People.

“I experienced academic burnout for the first time just before Thanksgiving,” said Megan Spurlock, a sophomore studying pre-nursing. “I think it was caused by all of my classes trying to get ready for graduation week.”

There are many factors that contribute to academic burnout. Heavy workloads and stressful classes are big factors, but unrealistic goals, poor time management, and lack of sleep with an unhealthy diet are also important factors.

“Dormitory life is definitely an important factor in burnout because you are surrounded by people all the time,” said Connor Tobey, a sophomore studying chemical engineering. “If these people don’t work that well, it’s hard for you to want to work too.”

It’s no secret that online learning caused by the pandemic has resulted in both loss of motivation and the development of unhealthy school habits.

“I feel like online learning has caused me academic burnout,” Grace Jacobs, a sophomore studying psychology, said in an email. “I personally find it very difficult to learn online because I learn better and can concentrate better personally. I’m not studying that well and it makes me not care about the content. It’s too easy to just turn my brain off while I’m in an online class. “

Online learning has opened the door for many new distractions that weren’t there before to hit the scene in personal learning settings. Students feel that these distractions played a huge role in forcing the students to a new level of burnout.

“Taking online classes and having disease issues has made it difficult to stay personal all the time,” said Tobey. “It was really a struggle this year to keep track of things. It’s really easy to get behind and not be able to catch up. ”

There are many strategic methods to counteract school burnout and create better school habits.

“My main motivation was to use a planner and do all of my tasks one step at a time,” said Spurlock.

In addition to using planners, it is important to plan time for small breaks in everyday school life. Frequent breaks from studying can “recharge” the brain after it has absorbed large amounts of new information. Effective breaks also reduce stress and help with reorientation, so The learning center.

Ohio University also offers many resources for students facing academic burnout. Counseling and psychological services provides mental health and adaptation services for students and faculty through individual and group counseling and psychiatry.

The Allen Counseling Center supports students in finding the best path for themselves and in making strategic decisions that will lead them to graduation. Advisors are available for all OU students.

The Academic Achievement Center understands that students need support to best achieve their academic goals. The AAC helps Bobcats achieve their academic goals by providing free tutoring, typing support, academic coaching, and complementary classes.

Students can counteract academic burnout by setting new achievable goals, taking breaks during their studies and using tools such as planners, calendars and the many resources of OU.
